Retreat to the calm and green environment of the Hortus for a Pride week among the plants! In the sunny summer garden we celebrate diversity: we do this with a Botanical College tour, a themed guided tour and a queer speed dating session. Read on to find out about our Pride activities!

We kick off Pride with a very interesting Botanical College on Wednesday July 26. Together with the audience and various guests from the fields of science and art, we dive into the theme of Gender & Taxonomy. What does ‘gender’ mean and how do we perceive it? What does gender mean in the plant kingdom? In our beautiful greenhouse, the public – surrounded by numerous plants – is involved in the dialogue and there is plenty of room for questions and discussion. Guests are Geertje Mak (Prof. Dr. Gender History at the UvA), Marnel Scherrenberg (former collection manager at Naturalis) and Sergi Rusca (curator at RADIUS CCA). The garden is opened exclusively for the College this Wednesday evening: we start at 19:30.

Join this themed tour through the colourfully blooming garden about (gender) diversity in the plant kingdom. On this tour, you will discover that gender diversity is not exclusive to humans. You will learn how and why plants have both male and female traits. In addition, plants that have been important in the history of the LGBTQIA+ community are also discussed. This themed tour takes place on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 July and both start at 11:00 am. Depending on the group, the tour will be in English or Dutch.

Put on something nice and practice on your best flirting techniques in the mirror, because on Wednesday evening 2 August you can go to the Hortus for a queer speed dating session! Our host Safiya welcomes all participants with a festive glass of bubbles in the beautiful Palmhouse. Get to know each other during the romantic nightfall… Afterwards you and your match can do a fun quest through the garden and greenhouses. Will the Hortus be the start of your summer romance?
The evening starts at 19:00 (walk-in). The speed dating rounds will start at 7:30 PM!

In July and August – during Pride – you can also enjoy the garden and greenhouses in the evenings: on Thursdays and Sundays the Hortus is open until 9 p.m. Come and enjoy the peace and quiet among the greenery after a hectic day at work. Have a refreshing cocktail on the terrace of the Hortuscafé. Or make it a night out and invite your date for a summer dinner after a walk through the garden!
