Our `penis plants` (๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ถ๐ด ๐ท๐ข๐ณ๐ช๐ข๐ฃ๐ช๐ญ๐ช๐ด and ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ถ๐ด ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ซ๐ข๐ค) may be smaller, but they`re pretty spectacular in their own right.
A. variabilis is known for its beautifully mottled, highly variable stem, while A. konjac has a striking spotted stem and an enormous, intricately divided leaf.

๐๐ช๐ฃ๐ช๐ด๐ค๐ถ๐ด ๐ค๐ข๐ฏ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฃ๐ช๐ฏ๐ถ๐ด, also known as ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฎ๐ณ, is grown for the long, strong fibres in its stems, which can be used to make paper, rope, textiles and other materials.
๐Something is rattling in the greenhouseโฆ The aptly named ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐๐น๐ฒ๐๐ป๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ or ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐๐น๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฟ (๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ข ๐ค๐ณ๐ฐ๐ต๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข) is native to tropical Central and South America.
The unusual, overlapping bracts resemble the rattling tail of a rattlesnake - which inspired the plantโs name. Its actual flowers are much smaller and emerge from between the bracts.

๐ฅน๐คThe prettiest thing you`ll see today: the delicate white flowers of this beautiful and charming ๐ธ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ณ-๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐-๐ผ๐ณ-๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐๐๐ (๐๐ข๐ณ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ด๐ด๐ช๐ข ๐ข๐ด๐ข๐ณ๐ช๐ง๐ฐ๐ญ๐ช๐ข).
๐It`s native to the southeastern United States, but you can also find it flowering in our carnivorous garden bed.
Say hello to one of our strangest Palm House residents: the ๐๐ฆ๐ญ๐ธ๐ช๐ต๐ด๐ค๐ฉ๐ช๐ข ๐ฎ๐ช๐ณ๐ข๐ฃ๐ช๐ญ๐ช๐ด or ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ฎ or ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฏ๐น๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ.โ

It has just two leaves - and they keep growing throughout its entire life. It grows in the deserts of Namibia and Angola, where it survives on very little water. Some Welwitschia can live for more than a thousand years! Ours is just a baby though - it`s 8 years old. โ

Deze bijzondere plant heeft maar twee bladeren โ en die blijven gedurende zijn hele leven doorgroeien. De Welwitschia groeit in de woestijnen van Namibiรซ en Angola, waar hij met maar heel weinig water weet te overleven. Sommige exemplaren kunnen meer dan duizend jaar oud worden! Die van ons is nog maar een jonkie: hij is 8 jaar oud.โ

The ๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฒ ๐ด๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฑ (๐๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ณ๐ต๐ฐ๐ด ๐ข๐ญ๐ต๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ช) is one of the oldest plants in the Hortus collection. This ancient cycad has been growing for around three centuries and lives comfortably in our Palm House. โ

๐ฆCycads have existed for nearly 300 million years and are among the most primitive seed plants. Itโs hard to imagine, but these ancient plants witnessed both the rise and extinction of the dinosaurs. โ

De ๐ข๐ผ๐๐-๐๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐๐ฒ ๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฏ๐ผ๐ผ๐บ (๐๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ณ๐ต๐ฐ๐ด ๐ข๐ญ๐ต๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ช) is een van de oudste planten uit de Hortuscollectie. Deze eeuwenoude cycadee gaat al eeuwen mee en hij heeft een comfortabel plekje in onze Palmenkas.โ

๐ฆCycadeeรซn bestaan al bijna 300 miljoen jaar en behoren tot de meest primitieve zaadplanten. Het is moeilijk voor te stellen, maar deze oeroude planten maakten zowel de opkomst als het uitsterven van de dinosauriรซrs mee.
Our Palm Houseโs main character is definitely the ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ฟโ๐ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐น๐บ (๐๐ข๐ท๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐ข ๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ข๐ด๐ค๐ข๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ด๐ช๐ด). With its huge fan of leaves, itโs hard to miss. Despite its name, the travellerโs palm isnโt actually a palm at all. It belongs to the same family as the bird of paradise (Strelitzia), and itโs often mistaken for either a Strelitzia or a banana. Itโs native to Madagascar, where it can grow to more than 10 metres tall.
Its leaves are arranged in a distinctive fan shape, and rainwater can collect where the leaves meet the stem, one possible explanation for its common name, as this water may have provided a drink for thirsty travellers.
While the roof is getting a well-deserved restoration, weโre putting some of the Palm Houseโs plant residents in the spotlight.
The roof restoration is being carried out in phases, so you can still visit the Palm House and see this leafy giant in action. โจ

Eรฉn van de hoofdpersonen van de Palmenkas is zonder twijfel onze ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐ผ๐บ (๐๐ข๐ท๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐ข ๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ข๐ด๐ค๐ข๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ด๐ช๐ด). Met zijn enorme waaier van bladeren is hij moeilijk over het hoofd te zien. De reizigersboom behoort tot dezelfde familie als de paradijsvogelbloem (Strelitzia) en wordt vaak aangezien voor een Strelitzia of een bananenplant. De soort komt oorspronkelijk uit Madagaskar, waar hij meer dan 10 meter hoog kan worden. ๐ฟ
De bladeren staan in een opvallende waaiervorm gerangschikt. Regenwater kan zich verzamelen op de plekken waar de bladeren samenkomen met de stam. Dit is een van de mogelijke verklaringen voor de naam โreizigersboomโ: het zou de dorst kunnen lessen van voorbijkomende reizigers.
Terwijl het dak van de Palmenkas een welverdiende restauratie krijgt, zetten we een aantal van de planten die eronder groeien in de spotlight.
De restauratie wordt in fases uitgevoerd, dus je kunt de Palmenkas gewoon blijven bezoeken en deze groene blikvanger bewonderen. โจ
