Dunes and pond
This part of the garden refers to two distinct landscapes found around the city of Amsterdam: the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes (Waterleidingduinen) and the Loenderveen lakes. Even with its relatively small land area, the Netherlands boasts a rich variety of natural environments—forests, heathlands, meadows, dunes, and wetlands.
Around the pond, you’ll find plants from the dune ecosystem of the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes. In the pond itself, many of the aquatic species originate from the wetland area near Loenderveen. Both landscapes play an important role in purifying Amsterdam’s drinking water: the lakes serve as reservoirs, while the sand of the dunes naturally filters the water.
