Geen dubbele bloei zoals we hadden gehoopt, maar magisch was het zeker. 🌸✨
Afgelopen week openden we de Hortus ’s avonds, speciaal om de bloeiende Victoria-waterlelie te bewonderen. De oudere bloem was inmiddels roze verkleurd, maar de nieuwe bloemknop bleef helaas dicht. Geen dubbele bloei dus, maar de Victoria in de avond was alsnog een bijzonder gezicht.

Not quite the double bloom we’d hoped for, but magical all the same. 🌸✨
Last week, we opened the Hortus after hours to see the Victoria water lily in bloom. The older flower had turned pink, while the newer bud unfortunately stayed closed. No double bloom this time, but seeing the Victoria in the evening was something special. (🦉Also: have you heard the tawny owl too?!)
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this little after-hours moment with one of our most extraordinary plants. 💚

💔This spectacular plant is extinct in the wild.
It`s the 𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗰𝗵𝘀𝗶𝗮 (𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴): with its dangling clusters of golden-yellow and deep red flowers it almost looks too extravagant to be real.
Native to the cloud forests of Chiapas, Mexico, the plant was lost from its only known wild location after the forest was cleared for agriculture. Today, it survives in cultivation thanks to seeds collected before its habitat disappeared.

💔 Deze spectaculaire plant is in het wild uitgestorven.

Dit is de gouden fuchsia (Deppea splendens). Met z`n hangende trossen van goudgele en dieprode bloemen ziet hij er bijna te uitbundig uit om echt te zijn.
De plant komt van nature voor in de nevelwouden van Chiapas, Mexico. Nadat het bos op de enige bekende vindplaats was gekapt voor landbouw, verdween de plant uit het wild. Dankzij zaden die werden verzameld voordat haar leefgebied verloren ging, bestaat de soort vandaag de dag nog in cultivatie.

Loved by many visitors: our butterfly greenhouse! 🦋 In this warm, leafy corner of the Hortus, butterflies drift between the plants, appearing and disappearing among the leaves. A tiny world of its own - and with a little luck you might even spot caterpillars, too!🐛

👀Did you know this? The world’s most expensive spice starts with a tiny autumn flower: 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘶𝘴. Unlike many crocuses, it flowers in autumn. And hidden inside each purple flower are three long, red stigmas. These are harvested by hand and dried to make saffron.
Because every flower produces only three, a lot of flowers are needed for a little spice.

👀Wist jij dit? Eén van de duurste specerijen ter wereld begint bij een klein herfstbloeiend bloemetje: 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘶𝘴.
In tegenstelling tot veel andere krokussen bloeit deze soort in de herfst. Verborgen in elke paarse bloem zitten drie lange, rode stampers. Die worden met de hand geoogst en gedroogd om saffraan van te maken. Omdat elke bloem maar drie stampers oplevert, zijn er heel wat bloemen nodig voor een klein beetje specerij.
