The autumn crocus is sometimes called `naked boys` or `naked ladies`: because the flowers emerge from the ground long before the leaves appear.

๐คโWhy do some plants smell so good when you rub their leaves?
Plants use smell as a form of communication. Their scents come from volatile compounds and essential oils: they do this to attract pollinators and repel predators.
When you gently rub the leaf, you release some of these compounds - and suddenly your fingers smell like mint, basil, lavender or even apple! ๐
However, what smells delicious to us might be a very effective โplease donโt eat meโ message to someone else. ๐

A King has risen in our Cape Greenhouse.๐ค๐
This is the ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ (๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฆ๐ข ๐ค๐บ๐ฏ๐ข๐ณ๐ฐ๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ด โLittle Princeโ). Ours may be a compact cultivar, but it has some seriously royal credentials. The king protea is the national flower of South Africa and it`s native to South Africaโs fynbos, a uniquely diverse vegetation type where plants have evolved to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, seasonal drought and, for many species, regular fires.๐บ๐ฟ๐ฆ

De koningsprotea is de nationale bloem van Zuid-Afrika en komt van nature voor in het fynbos, een uniek en divers vegetatietype waar planten zich hebben aangepast om te gedijen in voedselarme bodems, seizoensgebonden droogte en, voor veel soorten, regelmatige branden.๐บ๐ฟ๐ฆ
