A King has risen in our Cape Greenhouse.😤👑
This is the 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗮 (𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘢 𝘤𝘺𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 ‘Little Prince’). Ours may be a compact cultivar, but it has some seriously royal credentials. The king protea is the national flower of South Africa and it`s native to South Africa’s fynbos, a uniquely diverse vegetation type where plants have evolved to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, seasonal drought and, for many species, regular fires.🌺🇿🇦

Dit is de 𝗸𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗮 (𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘢 𝘤𝘺𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 ‘Little Prince’). Onze soort mag dan wel een compacte cultivar zijn, maar hij heeft wel degelijk blauw bloed. De koningsprotea is de nationale bloem van Zuid-Afrika en komt van nature voor in het fynbos, een uniek en divers vegetatietype waar planten zich hebben aangepast om te gedijen in voedselarme bodems, seizoensgebonden droogte en, voor veel soorten, regelmatige branden.🌺🇿🇦

This strange strange plant has a long and fascinating history of medicine, myth and folklore. So for this Medieval Monday, we`re diving into the world of 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘮 - and finding out why this plant had such a terrifying reputation. 😱

🫚We hebben het al eens over de 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝘂𝗶𝗻 gehad… maar laten we er eens wat dieper op ingaan. Deze vreemde plant kent een lange en fascinerende geschiedenis op het gebied van geneeskunde, mythologie en folklore. Dus voor deze Middeleeuwse Maandag duiken we in de wereld van 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘮 - en ontdekken we waarom deze plant zo’n angstaanjagende reputatie had. 😱
💙❤️ Some plants prefer subtle shades. 𝘍𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳 is not one of them.
🇨🇱This bromeliad, native to Chile, turns its central leaves bright red when it`s ready to flower. Then, as if that wasn`t enough, vivid blue flowers emerge from the centre.

💙❤️ Sommige planten geven de voorkeur aan subtiele kleuren. 𝘍𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳 hoort daar niet bij.
🇨🇱Deze bromelia, afkomstig uit Chili, kleurt zijn middelste bladeren felrood wanneer hij klaar is om te bloeien. En alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, verschijnen er vervolgens levendig blauwe bloemen in het midden.

This incredibly rare shrub grows naturally in the understory of wet lowland rainforests in Costa Rica and Panama. In Costa Rica, only around 30 plants are currently known to remain in the wild. Its habitat is under pressure from deforestation for agriculture and timber, making this little-known plant seriously threatened.
The species was only first discovered by botanists in 1974, and it`s currently cultivated in just a few dozen botanical gardens worldwide.

Vandaag is een geweldige dag voor onze tropische collectie: 𝘖𝘴𝘢 𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘤𝘩𝘳𝘢 staat in bloei! 🌿
Deze ongelooflijk zeldzame struik groeit van nature in de ondergroei van vochtige laaglandregenwouden in Costa Rica en Panama. In Costa Rica zijn er momenteel slechts ongeveer 30 planten in het wild bekend. Zijn leefgebied staat onder druk door ontbossing voor landbouw en houtwinning, waardoor deze weinig bekende plant ernstig bedreigd is.
De soort werd pas in 1974 door botanici ontdekt en wordt momenteel in slechts enkele tientallen botanische tuinen wereldwijd gekweekt.

After all the #WaterlilyWeighOff26 excitement, the Victoria in our outside pond started putting on a spectacular show. 🌸
🍍This giant waterlily flower opens white on its first night, turns pink on its second, and fills the air with a sweet pineapple-like fragrance. With some luck you can also catch her flowers during the day!
Jewellery, but make it botanical. 🌿✨
This is 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗼𝗳-𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘀 (𝘊𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰 𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘺𝘯. 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘰 𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴), - and those little green pearls are doing much more than just looking fabulous.
Their round shape helps the plant store water while minimising water loss, making them perfectly suited to dry conditions in their native habitat in the South-African Cape Provinces. Basically: tiny botanical water tanks disguised as jewellery. 💧

Sieraden, maar dan in botanische stijl. 🌿✨
Dit is `𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗼𝗳-𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘀` (𝘊𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰 𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘺𝘯. 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘰 𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴), - en die kleine groene pareltjes doen veel meer dan er alleen maar mooi uitzien.
Door hun ronde vorm kan de plant water opslaan en tegelijkertijd waterverlies tot een minimum beperken, waardoor ze perfect zijn aangepast aan de droge omstandigheden in hun natuurlijke habitat in de Zuid-Afrikaanse Kaap. Kortom: minuscule botanische watertanks vermomd als sieraden. 💧
