Working with botanic gardens
Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is an internationally operating non-profit organization. BGCI’s goal is to connect botanic gardens in a global collaborative network to promote the conservation of plant diversity. More than 800 gardens in over 120 countries are affiliated with BGCI. The organization is headquartered in Richmond upon Thames (London). Its U.S. office is located at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois.
In the Netherlands, gardens also work closely together. The Dutch Association of Botanic Gardens (NVBT) is an umbrella organization comprising 25 gardens spread across the country. These include university botanic gardens, non-university botanic gardens, arboreta, and zoos with botanical departments. Together, we see it as our mission to contribute to the conservation of plant biodiversity as part of a sustainable world. Learn more at botanischetuinen.nl

Working with museums
De Hortus is a registered museum. Within Stichting Amsterdamse Musea (SAM), more than 50 museums in Amsterdam and the surrounding area collaborate. Through various consultation structures, they represent the interests of the museums, offer support, and share knowledge and information to improve museum operations.
The OAM (Overleg Amsterdamse Musea) is the consultative body of private and public museums in Amsterdam, established in 1994. Its members are registered museums, members of the Dutch Museum Association, and affiliated with Amsterdam Marketing. Supporting this consultation body are, among others, the MOAM (Marketing Consultation of Amsterdam Museums) and the EOAM (Education Consultation of Amsterdam Museums).

Partners in crime
De Hortus is a source of inspiration for many. Plants spark new ideas, product development, and beautiful collaborations. De Hortus is happy to support creative entrepreneurship—usually in the role of content partner and botanical expert—but we are also supported by many partners in our own projects.
Hotel Jakarta located on Java Island in Amsterdam, opened its doors in May 2018. De Hortus assisted in the selection and design of the subtropical indoor garden.
Stichting NL Bloeit! is committed to creating a resilient environment for flora, fauna, and people. Through initiatives such as planting and managing flower meadows, roadsides, and dikes, they focus on maintaining and promoting soil quality and native plant species. NL Bloeit! supports De Hortus in designing the native plant beds in the garden. Seeds for this collection are supplied by Cruydt-Hoeck Wilde bloemenzaden.
The visual identity of De Hortus was developed in 2021 by Studio Liz Klaver. Liz Klaver is a graphic designer and art director. For De Hortus, she drew inspiration from the (endless) evolution of nature—how each season creates new shapes and structures. She translated this into a fresh identity using vibrant colors.
Sprinklr is an enterprising startup specializing in organic houseplants, garden plants, and indoor greenery. Their mission is to bring (pesticide-free) nature into people’s homes. Together, we source plants from the organic Casper Verhoeven Nursery.
Willems Wermoed is the first Dutch vermouth, conceived and produced by Selier Spirits (Paul Selier) in Amsterdam. The vermouth contains 24 plant extracts inspired by and selected based on the De Hortus collection.
Illustrator Marlies Meijerink-Kruger from To Sparkle was married in the Palm Greenhouse in 2016. In 2023, the very same greenhouse crossed her path again when she was asked to design the Hortus tote bag.

Through our adoptieprogramma businesses and individuals can support De Hortus in their own personal way. Thanks to the Cultural ANBI (Public Benefit Organization) status of the Hortus Foundation, donations to this recognized charity are tax-deductible under Dutch income tax law.

In 2025, the Climate Greenhouse was (re)opened—a sustainably constructed greenhouse that tells the story of biodiversity, climate, and how the two are interconnected.
This project would not have been possible without our (construction) partners, who contributed their expertise, creativity, courage, and manpower.
Equally essential were the many institutions, funds, the Municipality of Amsterdam, the Friends Association, and numerous private donors who believed in our dream and helped make it a reality through their financial support.
