The Hortus is temporarily closed. To still be able to give our visitors their daily dose of Hortus, we have thought of something fun; a LIVE online tour during your lunchbreak, guided by one of our Hortus guides. We hope to make staying at home a bit more fun and greener!
The Hortus in Amsterdam was founded in 1638 as Hortus Medicus and has grown over four centuries into a beautiful botanical garden with a flourishing collection. The collection of the Hortus consists of more than 4,000 plant species from all over the world. Originally, the Hortus was a medicinal herb garden, but as a result of the global network of the United East India Company, the collection expanded rapidly in the 17th century with exotic ornamental plants. Every plant in the Hortus has its own story. But also our buildings, mostly national monuments, each describe a part of Amsterdam’s history.
Would you like to take a digital walk through the Hortus during your lunch break and learn more about the collection? You can!
